For my SME interview, I interview Rebecca Tippett. Becca has been marketing for a property management company (Rocky Creek Investments) for the past 20 years. Since its inception, she has been with the company and now handles things like a champ. Little back story, Becca was a stay-at-home mom of 4. This was a full-time job, but she needed more. Several friends and family came together to start a property investment team, and Becca was in charge of the marketing. Since she was the only one without a full-time job and had a business degree from UGA. On top of managing properties, Becca went back to school recently to become a CPA. She has been working part-time for a local non-profit in her area as a CPA.
The non-profit she works for helps small businesses with a start-up. I asked her some of the most important things to know when it came to funding for a small business. She listed these as her top 3 things:
- Know how much funding you need.
- Know your business plan inside and out.
- Ensure that you have done the leg work leading up to finding financing.
After talking with Becca about funding, I gave her my business plan. She was confused at first because she had never seen one for a school before. After that, she went through it page by page. There were several items that she suggested I change. We talked a lot about grants and some of the programs I run. Overall she was pleased with my work.
Becca was full of knowledge, and it was great getting to talk to her. I like to take what I talk about in these interviews and share it with my students. It’s great to get them thinking in the right direction.
