It Starts With You…..

The last chapter of the book “Extreme Ownership” was the most important. It concentrated on self-discipline. Why is it important? How does this apply to life? How does this apply to work?

Having self-discipline and motivating oneself is one of the most important traits I have seen in successful individuals. Possessing these gives you this sense of drive that others without do not have. I am proud to say that I have both of these traits. I might be this way because a soldier raised me, and he expected the same from his children. I have learned that having these traits also helps me in other aspects of my life. I am more open to failure because I can own my actions. I can get more accomplished because I can focus on the task at hand. I am a good worker because I do whatever it takes to complete the mission. I am not saying that I am perfect, but I try and give my best at everything that I do.

When working for others and trying to help them or an organization completes their mission or task, this is where the ownership ties everything together. Owning something you are apart of makes it easier to motivate yourself and stay focused on the job. Ownership gives you the want and drives to train, plan and execute. It all starts with that spark. That spark leads to bigger and better goals if you allow it.

I feel blessed to have found this book and have the chance to read it. With this face-paced world we live in, I rarely have the time to sit down and read, but this class gave me the reason to slow down and soak it all in. I am not a soldier, but it was nice to see the reasoning behind the values I was raised on. If I could give anyone any words of advice, it would be to own your mistakes, embrace them, and use them for lessons for the future. Make your goal to GROW! That is what makes you stand out from others in this world where it is so easy to blend in.

Below is a clip from Jocko summarizing his thoughts on Extreme Ownership.
